Eerie Encounters : The Odiyans of Kerala Part I

What are Odiyans? 

 Kerala as a state was known for its caste barriers in the 90s. It also had many black magicians who gave it a bad reputation. Odiyans were black magicians from lower castes who had powers like shape-shifting, hypnotizing, possessing, and teleporting. It is said that they performed various satanic rituals on random pregnant women, who were lured out of their homes by their powers. Then, they ripped out the fetuses from their body and sacrificed them to get pillathailam which, gave them the powers they needed.

 However, they did not know how to perform these rituals themselves. These rituals were thought to them by black magicians from a higher caste. Black magicians from higher castes made the ones from lower castes sign a magical pact that gave them full control over the latter whom they used to kill people and in turn taught them the rituals that would turn them into Odiyans.

 During those times, the people from the lower caste were treated badly and were not paid enough for the work they did. This made them agree to this pact as it paid them better. Also, Odiyans had a life span of only 30 years which, was the main reason behind black magicians from higher castes not transforming themselves into Odiyans. Legends say that Odiyans seized to exist since the late 90s but, some like Ajay still claim to have their lives wrecked by Odiyans.

Back Story

 Coming to the Story, Ajay is a 30-year-old man from Kerala and, he was 26 when he experienced the things I am going to narrate today. Ajay was in love with a girl named Rithika and they were committed to a serious relationship since their college days. He invited her to his sister’s marriage to introduce her to his parents. His parents liked her as well but, when they came to know that she belonged to a lower caste, they started to oppose their relationship.

 They deceived Ajay by saying that they would get him married to the girl he loved and tried to get him married to another girl named Rithika but, he got to know of their ploy and eloped with his lover to Malaysia where they settled down. Life was good until one day when he saw a one-eyed black cat in his house. It kept coming back despite, his attempts to chuck it out. That cat used to sneak into their bedroom at night and it stood there staring at them. The cat disappeared all of a sudden and coincidentally, he started seeing the silhouette of a man dressed in a veshti. He started to see the man roam inside the house often and whenever he followed him, he would see him disappear into thin air.

Story

 He decided to change their house as, he thought the one they were living in was haunted but, he started seeing that man in that house as well. Life went on, with him being worried about his work during the day and, the things he was seeing in the house during the night. On one such day, he returned late from his office and his wife did not open the house door despite him knocking on it multiple times. He heard something fall inside and broke into the house. When he entered, he saw his wife hang herself. He rushed to her rescue and saved her. He was mentally broken by what he saw and asked her why she resorted to taking her own life. He asked her if she was not happy with him to which she replied,” Sorry dear, I always wanted to tell you but it ordered me not to tell you. I have been hearing voices in my head asking me to kill myself. It told me that it would kill you and my family if I did not kill myself”.

 He thought that his wife was having issues with her mental health issues and took her to a psychiatrist he knew. The therapy sessions proved to be of no use, as she tried to kill herself repeatedly. After enduring this for a few days, he asked her parents to come and take her with them back to India as he thought that it would help her recover. He got a call from her father just moments after he took his wife with him. He attended the call anxiously. He burst into tears as the news that his wife died got into his ears from the phone. She had apparently jumped out of that running car which caused her demise.

 Broken by his wife’s demise he returned back to India. Giving him no time, his parents decided to get him married once again. He constantly rebuked this idea until he couldn’t do it no more. They asked him to marry the girl named Rithika they had previously spoken of but, he said to them that he would marry any girl other than her as her name reminded him of his wife and he did not want anyone else to replace her. His parents wanted to somehow get him married and got him married to another girl as soon as they could. They hoped for him to be happy again but, even his second wife died the same way his first wife did.

 Why were the girls who were marrying him, committing suicide? Could this be because of the figure he had seen earlier? Was there a way to remove the curse he had on him? What happened to him after all this? Find the answers here.
