Horrific Hauntings : The Peabody-Whitehead Mansion

4 minute read

If you happen to walk through the suburb of Denver, you would surely stumble upon an innocent-looking brick house named "The Peabody-Whitehead Mansion" encompassed by rusted wire fences. Trust me, this mansion has an extremely dark past and is not as innocent as it looks on the outside.

The Peabody-Whitehead Mansion

History

The Peabody-Whitehead Mansion was constructed in 1889 to house Dr William Whitehead. He moved from New York, where he served as a wartime surgeon during the course of the Crimean War. He was also among the founders of the Denver College of Medicine which was established in 1887 and also the President of the Colorado State Medical Society in 1883. Because of his profession and reputation, he made a lot of money which he used to construct the Mansion of his dreams. A few years after moving into the house, Whitehead met his demise inside the mansion in 1902.

After his death, Governor James Peabody, an extremely aggressive and adamant man, made the Mansion his home thus giving it the name "Peabody-Whitehead Mansion". The mansion was later abandoned before being bought by a new owner who renovated it into a Bar and Restaurant. It served its new purpose during the 1960s and 1970s.

During the mansion's renovation, two construction workers allegedly abducted a young girl and raped her until she died. It is said that they buried the poor girl's lifeless body in the basement of the Mansion itself before laying a new foundation. Apart from this tragic death, the walls of this Mansion have seen the death of many along with with a reported suicide.

Paranormal Occurrences

Dr William Whitehead the original owner of the mansion was a wartime surgeon and because of the war's intensity and the lack of medical knowledge during his time, despite his best efforts, he was not able to save the life of many of his patients. It is believed that the spirits of the soldiers who died under his nose, followed him to the newly built mansion when he moved in. He reported being tortured by these spirits and also said that he saw these ghosts in every place he looked.

It was not just him but also his family who got a ghostly experience with poltergeist activity being the most common. Books flying out of the shelf, falling picture frames, wiling during the night and glasses breaking on their own are a few of their dreadful experiences inside the mansion. Whitehead died inside the mansion itself in a few years and it is said that his spirit still haunts the mansion.

The paranormal activity seemed to reduce after Whitehead's death but after its conversion into a restaurant and bar, it peaked rapidly. The property's second owner, Governor Peabody was an extremely adamant man who made sure he got what he wanted. It seems like he was also adamant about staying inside the mansion even after his death.

During the restaurant phase of the mansion, workers reported glasses falling all by themselves to the ground, being thrown on walls, and mysteriously breaking when they were still on the bar top. Also, a chandelier which was completely disconnected from electricity was seen flickering sporadically without any source of power.

To add to the already terrible energies the mansion had, a young girl was raped to death by two construction workers who worked in the mansion's renovation. They buried the girl in the mansion's basement and later laid the foundation on top of the poor kid's burial. Her troubled spirit is now said to haunt the mansion.

Paranormal investigators believe that at least 12 different phantoms haunt the mansion. A spirit named Eloise who died inside the building is said to haunt the second floor of the mansion and a waitress who killed herself inside the basement is said to still haunt the basement of the mansion. Some claim to have seen the phantom of an old man near the women's bathroom on the first floor. It is believed that he haunts the complete floor with the bathroom being the paranormal hotspot. Visitors have claimed to sense a strong smell of cherry-scented pipe in this space.

The phantom of a woman who died within the mansion's walls while waiting for her arriving fiancé has also been reported by many to be peeking out of the mansion's windows. Visitors have reported books flying off the shelves, objects being thrown around, constant wailing during the nights, eerie sounds of infants crying, ringing of disconnected bells and phones, mysterious scratches and bruises and many other paranormal events within the house.

Current State.

With a metal gate that blocks the public from getting too close, this dreaded mansion now lies abandoned. With the future of the mansion still unclear, entering it is highly restricted. Locals, however, wouldn't enter it even if they are allowed to as they fear that the mansion's deadly spirits might follow them into their home.
